Diamond Peak wins 2019 Golden Pinecone sustainability award from GREENevada

Incline Village, Nev. (Feb. 19, 2019) – Diamond Peak Ski Resort is proud to be recognized by non-profit GREENevada with the 2019 Golden Pinecone Sustainability Award for its sustainability efforts. The community-owned ski resort in Incline Village, Nevada will take top honors in the Government Agency category on Feb. 20, 2019 at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Reno.

Nevada’s Golden Pinecone Awards celebration has a 30-year history of honoring outstanding organizations and individuals for their achievements in improving and sustaining the environment. Originally initiated by Environmental Leaders in 1991, this year’s awards are being presented by local Reno-Tahoe non-profits GREENevada and greenUP!.

“Being recognized with a Golden Pinecone award is a great honor,” said Mike Bandelin, Diamond Peak general manager. “Our staff has worked diligently over the 34 years I’ve been here to ensure we’re treating the mountain with respect and minimizing any negative impacts our operations might have on the natural environment. And we’ve been very successful in finding the right partners to ensure that continues.”

Diamond Peak, in conjunction with the Incline Village General Improvement District’s Waste Not department, was recognized for their industry-leading sustainability initiative with STOKE Certified over the past two years, as well as its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.

Diamond Peak Ski Resort became first in the region and second in the nation to be recognized for sustainable operations in 2018 by completing a two-year evaluation and certification process by the independent, third party service STOKE Certified (Sustainable Tourism Operator’s Kit for Evaluation). The ski area achieved an overall compliance score of 78% across 110 criteria in four categories of sustainability performance. Top initiatives for the community-owned ski area include: free town shuttles, electric vehicle charging stations, a children’s coloring book featuring plants and animals native to the resort, and millions of dollars of investment into local watershed restoration. Refillable water pouches, filling stations, and “Take Care” signage have aided a 34% reduction in water bottle sales. Diamond Peak’s average waste diversion rate of 36% combined with recycling ideas such as molding old maps into terrain features has avoided 446 metric tons of CO2 (2015-2017) equal to 1 million vehicle miles. About the Golden Pinecone Awards

GREENevada stands for Growing Resources for Environmental Education in Nevada and is a consortium of 20+ environmental organizations in Northern Nevada whose mission is to foster sustainability through environmental education and leadership. The fiscal sponsor for the event is greenUP! a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The Golden Pinecone Ball was started by Tod Bedrosian, Bob Fulkerson, Glenn Miller and Bob Loux to bring the environmental community together as friends and initially to get the community excited about stopping the dump of nuclear waste. The pinecone awards were handmade out of plywood, an ironic twist on formal award ceremonies to honor environmental achievements of the past year.
